North Shuswap Elementary School is a unique and special school.  It is situated near the shores of Shuswap Lake; the school has a beautiful view of the Shuswap Lake.  Students who attend North Shuswap come from Lee Creek, Scotch Creek, Celista, Magna Bay and Anglemont.  Almost the entire population is bussed to and from school.  This school is the central hub of all of these communities.  The nearest major centres are Chase (40km) and Salmon Arm (80km).  The North Shuswap is well known as a summer tourist destination.

Although opportunities for employment have been growing in the North Shuswap, we are unsure at this time what effect the current economic downturn will have on our community.  The traditional forestry industry is decreasing however the growing construction industry has created more jobs for skilled labour.  Many people commute daily to the closest towns – Chase, Kamloops and Salmon Arm for work.  Other people work a longer distance away and only return to their home during weekends or time off.  There are also a large number of home based businesses in the North Shuswap.  More employment is available in the summer tourist season and many people work seasonally.    The North Shuswap is also well known as a retirement area.  We have an active Seniors Community in Anglemont.   Increasing property prices may pose challenges for young families.

North Shuswap Elementary receives very strong support from the North Shuswap Community.  Many parents at North Shuswap School are actively involved in various activities in the school; from chaperoning field trips and fund raising to serving healthy lunches.  The PAC at North Shuswap is extremely supportive of students and teachers.  PAC has provided funds for much needed supplies, books and resources.
We are fortunate to have the Country Kids Preschool in our school again this year.  We believe the partnership with our preschool community is a critical element in meeting the early literacy needs of our school community.  Plans continue to have the preschool staff share in our Parents as Literacy Supporters (PALS) and Ready Set Learn programs in the 2009-2010 school year.

We are also very excited about continuing to investigate and implement some middle school philosophy and practice in our upper intermediate configuration this school year.  To that end, we will maintain an upper intermediate wing in our school and pursue opportunities for teachers to engage in team teaching of the grade 5, 6, and 7 classes.
